Why Embark?

I wanted to take a time to write a short blog post about why we will be using embark DNA kits on all puppies. As we begin our adventure into breeding, I made the initial decision that any puppy produced by Ivie Huskies will be embarked before they leave our kennel. The short answer for future puppy buyers, is that Embark allows us to verify the absence (or presence) or certain genetic diseases, and improve our kennel productions.

Embark is genetic panel that tests for a wide range of information. Specifically, Embark can verify a dogs breed composition (within the last four generations), genetic diseases, genetic traits, and inbreeding COI. It is a large expense to take on as a breeder, however, the information we will be able to attain and track throughout our breeding program is worth the extra cost.

What are the benefits of Embark from the perspective of an owner?

1. Although it is not something we are concerned about, Embark will all our puppy buyers to verify their puppy is 100% Siberian Husky in its genetic composition. It allows for piece of mind that you are purchasing exactly what you believe you are, a Siberian Husky.

2. Embark also allows buyers to verify that their puppy will not suffer from specific testable genetic diseases. Currently, Embark tests for Gangliosidosis (GM1), Degenerative Myelopathy (DM), and Progressive retinal Atrophy (XLPRA1). Below are brief explanation of symptoms associated with each disease.

GM1: Neurologic symptoms first appear 1-3 months of age. Nystagmus, difficulties walking, loss of balance, head tremors and weight loss. Abnormal growth. Usually lethal by age 1.

DM: Muscle atrophy and loss of coordination beginning in hind legs. Abnormal gait. Loss of ability to walk within a year of onset of symptoms.

XLPRA1: Clinical symptoms begin with dilated pupils, increased reflectivity, and impaired night vision, which soon progresses to complete blindness. Secondary cataracts may be present.

Furthermore, Embark is an ever evolving panel, which updates frequently with new verified tests. Typically, dogs who have been previously tested will eventually have their panel updated to reflect the findings of new testable diseases. If they are not automatically updated, you can contact Embark and request your dog's profile be test.

What are the benefits of Embark from the perspective of a breeder?

1. Although not of major importance, Embark can reveal genetic information as it relates to traits. This means, Embark can aid in predicting color combination outcomes of breeding pairs.

2. As before mentioned, Embark can verify genetic diseases of breeding stock. It specifically allows breeders to pair dogs more confidently. Ethical breeders should never intentionally produce puppies that could be affected by any genetic disease. Embark allows breeders to make informed decisions and ethical pairings that will not produce affected. Furthermore, it can help us remove carriers from our breeding population.

3. Embark helps identify the inbreeding coefficient of individual puppies (genetic diversity). The inbreeding coefficient of purebred breeding dogs is extremely important to understand as a breeder. Studies are showing this coefficient has major effects on the health of the breed. Higher inbreeding coefficients (and subsequently less genetic diversity) leads to a myriad of issues. Higher rates for genetic diseases, physically smaller dogs, shorter life expectancy rates, and smaller litter sizes. It is important for breeders to monitor the inbreeding coefficients in their program in order to provide healthier dogs and maintain a healthier breeding program.

Although Embarking every puppy is a large initial investment, we want to be able to produce the healthiest puppies possible. We strive to preserve the Siberian Husky and we believe this is a valuable step in ensuring the breed remains strong and healthy for generations to come.
